Part 5~~

The next seven months that you spent in Germany was a blur of sadness and confusion. Matthias still hadn't turned up anywhere and all clues that could possibly lead to him turned up being dead ends and disappointments. The countries of the world had welcomed you with open arms and somber smiles knowing that none of them could ever really know how you were feeling or lessen the pain. You were now just days away from your predetermined due date.

While you stayed at Ludwig’s, often times with Alfred by your side keeping you company, Ludwig had all of the countries on a frantic search for Matthias. But with every passing month, you could only feel the weight of Matthias’ absence weigh down on your heart and all of the joy that used to be in you was slowly starting to disappear.

Ludwig had gotten you a new doctor in Germany that would be able to help you along with your pregnancy but it wasn't the same and you felt that just being in Germany was taking such a toll on your body that you were constantly not only worried about Matthias but you were worried about the well being of your soon-to-be-born son.

Alfred had noticed this and quickly approached Ludwig about it. “Ludwig, let me take _____ back to the US. She won’t last much longer up here. I need to take her home.” The mere seriousness of Alfred’s tone was enough for Ludwig to agree with Alfred. “Make sure she is vell taken care of”, Ludwig responded with a somber look on his face.

~~~ 17 years later ~~~
You sat at the kitchen table with your house phone in hand talking to Alfred.
“No, Alfred. Only red and black, you know that” you laughed.
“But _____, I’m sure the little tyke won’t mind an American Flag cake. Who doesn't like America?!” he shouted through the phone with a playful laugh.
“I think you and I both know that he already gets enough of your patriotic garbage on a daily basis” you replied with a giggle. “And remember, Demetrius is not a “tyke” any more. Have you forgotten what we’re celebrating in the first place?” you added while picking up the party invitation that you had sent to all of your friends and family.
Across the top of the black card stock invitation, it read: Happy 18th Birthday, Demetrius!
That’s right; you had successfully given birth to a beautiful baby boy, whom you named Demetrius Espen _____. He had Matthias’ good looks and your spunky attitude to boot, and you couldn't be prouder. Demetrius had grown up to be a very handsome and very respectful young man. In just a few months he would be headed off to college and you could only dream of what he would achieve.
“How could I?” Alfred replied with a heavy sigh. “It seems like only yesterday I almost knocked someone out in the waiting room when they said that I couldn't see you right away.”
You smiled at the memory of the doctor coming in your room in a frantic panic because there was “a madman” who wanted to see you but the he wouldn't let him in because he wasn't immediate family. You remember thinking to yourself that you felt sorry for the doctor who had to deal with the godfather of your child.
“Yes and you very nearly got us thrown out” you said while shaking your head and laughing.
There was a pause on Alfred’s end for a brief second.
“So how are you doing?” Alfred asked quietly with a hint of worry in his voice.
You smiled and ran your hand through your _____ hair. You couldn't place a certain moment, since you have known him, when Alfred wasn't as loud or hilariously obnoxious as he used to be, but you can’t say that you were too sad about it. Before it seemed that Alfred would only keep him composure when one of his friends was in a time of need but ever since you showed up on his doorstep that almost 18 years ago looking for comfort and a shoulder to cry on, he had begun to see that he needed to be something more than just himself, he realized that he could act his age and still be a hero. (like superman)
You sighed heavily, “I don’t know, Al. Tired, worried, excited….I don’t know. Everything, maybe?”
He laughed and added, “Well you’re not alone in that. It’s hard to believe that he’s going to be leaving the house in a matter of months. It’ll sure be quiet at your house without him there.”
“Yeah…” you started to tear up as you thought of just how different it would be when Demetri was gone. “Okay, enough! I told myself that I would NOT cry until after the party and you are certainly NOT helping.”
“Fine, fine _____. But remember, that is the same thing that you said at his graduation and you didn't even get through the ceremony without breaking down”, Alfred reminding you, yet again when it came to your son, you couldn't contain your feelings.
“Oh, right. Okay, Mr. Hero. Lest we forget your tear filled speech given at his graduation party”, you teased him.
“Touché, touché; well played, well anyway I’ll see you in a bit. I picked up the cake, so I’m gonna head back to my house to pick up Demetri’s gift and I will be over in about 20 minutes.”
“Alright, I’ll see you then”, you replied hanging up the phone.
Just as you did, you heard the front door open and someone walking toward the kitchen.
Demetri poked his head inside the kitchen, “Hey mom, I’m home.”
Quickly you snatched up the secret party invitation on the table and hid it behind your back.
“So, I see”, you smiled nervously at him, hoping that he didn't see the invitation.
Demetri wasn't supposed to be home for another hour or so. You hoped and prayed that he would just go up into his room like every other normal teenager on the planet.
Demetri gave you a look that reminded you so much of Matthias when he knew that you were up to something, and you felt a pang of sadness for a brief second knowing that Demetri never knew his father; Demetri would never know the man that he inherited his wild blonde hair or his deep blue eyes from. You had of course thought about these things before but it hit you especially then, now that Demetri was about to go on and make a life for himself.
You gave a shaky smile, squeezing the invitation behind you. “Everything okay there, mom?” Demetri asked, entering the kitchen.
You nodded as you watched Demetri walk over to the cookie jar and stuff a snicker doodle in his mouth before giving you a questioning look.
“Gosh, you teenagers are so persistent. Just go up to your room and eat your stupid cookie.” You were trying not to give away anything. You had always been really bad at keeping secrets but you had held out for almost a month and you weren’t about to let it go now.
“Good afternoon to you too, mother”, he said opening the fridge to pour himself a glass of milk.
You stuffed the crumpled invitation in your back pocket and pointed your finger at your son jokingly. “Hey, don’t make me open up a can mom whoop-de-doo on you. You may be almost 18 but I still wear the pants in this house.”
Demetri smirked as he downed the glass of milk. “Then was does uncle Al wear?”
You snuck behind him and grabbed a cookie for yourself. “Uncle Al wears the kilt.”
“Uh, I do NOT wear kilts”, you heard Alfred say from the kitchen doorway.
You and Demetri both spun to look at Alfred. You saw Demetri smile and walk up to Alfred and give him a hug. “Hey Uncle Al” Demetri said flashing Alfred the same dazzling smile that his father had.
“Hey, what’s up, short stuff?” Alfred playfully patted down Demetri’s hair and laughed, even though Alfred really only had about an inch on your son.
“I’m almost there, old man.” Demetri replied, punching Alfred lightly in the arm.
“Wishful thinking will get you nowhere.” Alfred patted Demetri’s shoulder with a feigned look of sympathy on his face. “Anyway, I need to talk to your mom for a sec.”
“Fine by me, I need to work on my PX 90 training anyway.” Demetri said while running up the stairs into his room.
“Keep dreamin’, Greenie!” Alfred yelled behind him. It had always been a running joke between the two on who was the strongest and right now Alfred had him beat by more than a few years.
You laughed and sat down at the table, pulling out the previously hidden invitation. “That was close”, you sighed.
“You bet it was” Alfred said, pulling two giant wrapped gifts with a huge red cake from behind the couch. “I almost burst in here with the party in tow.”
You laughed again as you saw him struggle to balance everything in his arms and got up to help him set his things on the table. Once all of his belongings were safe and on the kitchen table, you heard the doorbell ring loudly through the house.
“Oh, I’ll get it. You can just put the cake in the freezer, thanks”, you pointed to the freezer and started to walk to the door.
You straightened your shirt and gave your hair a quick flounce, but all the preparation in the world would not have prepared you for who was on the other side of the door…
OMG...FINALLY!!!
In all honesty, this did not take me too long to write; it was actually STARTING this that was the hard part. After reading all of the comments, I realized that my story was taking a turn that I did not expect, so I had to tweak and change a few things...
Really?
In the end, I think it turned out okay...maybe
